FAQs

WHAT IS A HOST FAMILY?
A host family is a family that is willing to open up their house to a student from another country. The host family will provide a safe living space for the international student, and treat them like they are a part of the family.

WHAT IF I NEVER HOSTED AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT BEFORE?
We have created an informative handbook for families who are new to hosting an international student. The handbook gives insightful ideas and tips on how to make the experience of hosting an international student a wonderful experience. It also provides a look into what an international student is experiencing when they first arrive in the US. We also have an orientation program for families new to hosting an international student.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HOSTING AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT?
  • Extra incomes for your family!
  • Hosting an international student will help strengthen the bonds between two seemingly different cultures.
  • Strengthen family bonds as you help your international student learn about your town and community.
  • Increase and support cultural awareness and diversity among your community.
  • The experience of hosting an international student can create everlasting friendships.
  • Experience the joys of having a new family member to love!

HOW OLD ARE THESE STUDENTS?
The students will be attending a high school when they are with you. Most of the students will be incoming freshmen. The students will be between the ages of 14-19 when you are their host family.

AM I RESPONSIBLE FOR THE STUDENT'S FINANCES?
We do not expect you to cover any extra finances for your student. You will receive a monthly stipend to help cover extra finances that the student may bring; like food and transportation, but not for the student's personal expenses. For more details on this topic, look in the Host Family Handbook.

DO THE STUDENTS SPEAK ENGLISH?
Each student that you will be hosting will understand and speak some English. Some international students will be more fluent than others. In some cases, their skills in English may be better in reading and writing, and not necessarily in speaking.

HOW MANY STUDENTS CAN I HOST AT ONE TIME?
You can host as many international students in your house as you like but we prefer that you do not host more than one Chinese student at a time. One of the primary reasons the international student is in a host family is so that they can become more fluent in English. When there is more than one Chinese-speaking student in the house, we notice they will often prefer to speak to each other in Chinese. This will not help them increase their fluency in English.

HOW LONG WILL I HOST A STUDENT?
Usually a student will stay with the same host family for 4 to 10 months depending on both the host family and how long the student's studies are.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE MYSELF BEFORE THE STUDENT'S ARRIVAL?
You may want to do some research on the student's home country and read about some of their customs and meals. This preparation will help you initiate conversations more easily with your student and make the transition easier for both you and the student.
